It was wrong when they said it on the broadcast the other night, and it's wrong now. I like Frankie, and he's good, but HOF'er? Negative.
Why isn't he a future HOF'er? Of course a lot of guys will tell you that if Bonnar is in then Frankie should easily get in. I actually think Frankie is earning it though. Held the title at LW which I think we all agree was not his ideal weightclass. Beat BJ, Maynard and barely lost to Benson. Gave Aldo all he could handle for 5 rounds. And...he ain't done yet! It'll be interesting to see how the rest of his career shakes out.

On topic: BJ was a better fighter than his record will ever show. If he would have fought in the 145-155 range (ie not allowed himself to get lazy and fight at 170, etc.) for his whole career and not had any layoffs, he would have left a fantastic legacy. As it stands, he was "The Prodigy". Never really showed that he was "The Master" that he could've been.

I wish people would stop using this ridiculous reasoning for qualifying for HoF. The rule isn't if you're Bonnar +1 then you get in or 60% of the UFC roster would be HoF material.

Bonnar, especially, got into the HoF due to his epic TUF 1 finale war with Forrest Griffin. In no way did Bonnar earn it by virtue of his amazing career achievements or getting busted for PEDs twice.

If you want to get into the HoF based purely on fighting chops you need to be more in the Couture/Liddell/Ortiz range of success.

Edgar has a solid record overall, but his lack of finishes and his missing X factor (He's just not that popular) it's a coin flip if he'll actually make it. Even if Edgar does eventually make HoF it won't be because he's better than f'ing Bonnar.

Yeah, I hate when people use Bonnar as reason enough for HOF as well. That's why I continued to explore the topic rather than just leaving it at that.

Penn was over-hyped. Not because he wasn't good, because he was good, but he was discussed as a possible GOAT and failed to win enough big fights to support such accolades.

Well based on resumes there are a lot of LWs with better resumes. Gomi, aoki, Frankie, bendo plus some others.

Skill wise is a little more debatable. Like all the top LWs of today

BJ's weakness was laziness and loyalty. He quit the Marinovich program because Marv wanted to phase out his "yes" men friends. He performed like he did in BJ/Edgar 3 because he came up with a reason to skip his Nova Uniao training camp because of the Shogun robbery. He was always a fighter(bar the LW title run under Marv) that took the easy way out training wise. You don't sit on your ass for years at a time and expect to comeback and fight an animal like Rory or Edgar who has been training non stop to be a champion. When the people around you believe the hype...soon you do as well. BJ's talk of "starting my run to be the best ever"...every time that he said something like that, he got outclassed. BJ's later career is a tale of delusion.

This is all coming from someone that bought every BJ Penn walk out shirt and got goosebumps during every Penn walk out because it was so exciting to watch killer BJ Penn fight.

Sadly, Killer BJ Penn died at the same time that he sent the Marinovich bros. packing because he hated the structure and no nonsense business of the program.
