Just needs to be consistency. Not even with individual ref's performances but referees as a group. Fighters need to know roughly how much time they have to recover, what intelligent defense looks like etc. If one ref lets fights go and another stops them at the first sign of trouble then potentially fighters careers hinge on what referee they get for their fights. I know that isn't the only factor but it's extra shit fighters shouldn't have to worry about.

No one would have complained at all if Overeem/Browne had been stopped when they were against the cage.

Doesn't matter who the ref is/was

It's NEVER a good strategy to crash to the ground and then have undefended strikes thrown. Every fighter knows this.
