Instant replay would pretty much be impossible to use in mma, as it would, occasionally, lead to fighters wrongfully be given time to rest/recover.

Yep. If Dan was smart about it he should have stopped the fight right there. Why give him time to recover? A lot of people bitch about refs not giving fighters time to recover after being rocked when the ref steps in and calls the fight.

That right there was a prime example of turtling up in obvious pain, Miller saying it was a legal shot and wanting to continue when Cerrone could have clearly put him away right there and then.

What if a ref takes a point away and then we learn from a replay later that it wasn't a foul at all? Instant replay could stop that from happening.

Just my opinion.
What if Miller had that shot happen in round 1 and Cerrone won Round 1 10-9. Then Miller came back and won rounds 2 and 3 10-9. The ref takes a point away at the end of the fight or whatever, now we have a draw.

In that scenario, the ref would need to say "Miller was clearly hurt and not defending himself so the fight should have stopped and Cerrone wins".

I just don't see I.R. working in a combat sport.

If Dan was smart about it? Dan was the one who made the error and interrupted the action. He realized he was wrong when Jim Miller said it was a clean shot and he restarted the action. This was an honest mistake.

People are making a big deal out of nothing here. Refs blow calls in every game of every major sport. It's a part of the game. It affects MMA less than any other mainstream sport.

The only way it would work mid-fight is if you had a second ref outside the cage, who could just call out low blows or illegal strikes as the fight happened. Even then it would be hard to implement in a way that wouldn't case any delay for legal shots the in-cage ref thought were low.

Anyway, Miragliotta did a good job. The shot looked low, you could only really tell it wasn't on the replay. Miller said it wasn't, Dan immediately asked if he could continue, and the fight restarted. If this is the sort of mistake by a ref we're bitching about, they're doing a damn good job.

I agree with this. Dan made a mistake, but once Jim told him the kick was legal, he fixed it as best he could, by not giving Miller extra time and re-starting the fight right away.
