A beast, yes. But his game was mainly to get you down and beat you with overwhelming grappling and GnP. Watch his fights in the TUF house. He predominantly relied on his grappling, not his striking.
He also got blasted by Dodson standing, in the finale.
Beasts can improve, and TJ has. Where he improved was in his standup (Footwork, head movement, strikes, etc.); the place he had room for improvement.
Nobody expected him to pick apart Barao on the feet.
