yep he was a brown belt world champion; I can see why anyone would think he was a kickboxer though. He picked it up ridiculously fast and uses it almost exclusively.

If you look at sports as a whole, there are plenty of athletes who come straight off the streets and can compete with the best of them. Obviously, these types of athletes will need time to hone their skills. Unlike, the majority of the group, they haven't been doing it since they first started walking, so it will take time for them to develop. Such is the case for Rory.

Talent is talent. Doesn't matter if you started out with a solid base or not. Skills can be learned and experience can be accumulated, but talent is built-in.

You can take a talented individual, teach him the game and I'll guarantee that he can beat someone who's been doing it their entire life.
Talent is overrated.

Who is the greatest p4p boxer on the planet right now? Floyd Mayweather jr. People often attribute his succes to his talent but forget about how he grew up. He got introduced to boxing as a baby, raised by a pro boxer and trained at a young age by multiple high level fighters, almost raised in a boxing gym. Something similair holds true for Tiger Woods. His father would golf in front of him for hours when Tiger was too young to even say a word.

Innate ability will get you so far, the brain's incredible plasticity + discipline and tremendous effort is what divides Elite from middle-class.

And this thread doesn't even prove anything. Rory still has plenty of time to get his head screwed on straight and become champion.
What this thread proves is that "new breed MMA" at its current conception is overhyped and is not proven to give results. I used Rory as the example because his hype was just unrealistic. Rogan was going ballistic about his skills bla bla even after Robbie smashed his face. These new breed MMA guys aren't anywhere near as special as people make them out to be. Current data proves that all the UFC champions and all the top contenders are still specialists who added to their games. This is how things are and this is data that can't be denied.

japanese fighters need more exposure..
