cain uses it for gnp. It opens up a lot of opportunities but in mma its genrally position first so its better to keep full mount

When I was taught it, I was told that it's a transitional technique to get from side control to mount, traditionally.

I've never been taught direct subs from knee on belly but doesn't sound unbelievable.

Effective how? Because if you're asking if it has ever turned the tide of a fight or illicited a tapout, then no. It's used to put pressure on an opponent and open up avenues for movement. This is like asking if using underhooks in a clinch is effective, or if covering the mouth of an opponent gets a result. There are some things done in a fight because it may be helpful overall, but effective is a wierd choice of words.
