He should have an option to choose which belt to keep in case of win and retain the FW belt if he loses.

Isn't it obvious why? They want Faber to take the belt and get more ratings.

Dana just doesn't want one guy defending the belt in two weight classes at the same time. It would be interesting at first but after a while you're just watching one dude defend the belt all the time. That would also mean the title holder would have to fight a minimum of 4 times a year.

Because the man has said himself that his future was at lightweight, all the way back when he WEC Champ. He never intended to cut to 145 for his entire career. Do you know something he doesn't?

Even if he loses his first Lightweight Title fight, I seriously doubt he returns to 145 just to hold that title, that's no improvement. He has literally dominated EVERYONE down there that is even close to the title picture:
Mendes, Swanson, Edgar, Lamas, Zombie, & Faber (if he were to return to FW).. The list goes on & on.

Also, it's doubtful that he & BJ would even fight, & just as doubtful that Penn will beat Frankie.

There are plenty of new challenges for @ Lightweight, & really there is no reason for him to return to FW to rematch all of the fighters he defeated before.. He has nothing to prove at FW, unless someone he has never faced emerges as the new divisional kingpin, (McGreGOAT?).. but that's wishful thinking.

Seems kind of unfair to make him drop his title. He earned it with a spectacular string of victories over top opponents.

If he vacates the title, then they can have a "championship fight" while Aldo fights Pettis, just like WW is doing now that GSP vacated his title.. If Aldo loses to Pettis, then he'll just come back and fight for the FW title.

If he doesn't vacate the title, then FW can just have a "#1 contender fight", which is far less marketable than a title fight.

He should be able to hold onto the belt until the Pettis fight takes place.

With Pettis' history of getting injured I can see Aldo dropping the belt, Pettis getting injured while training for the fight leaving Aldo in limbo without a belt or a fight in either division.
