I think if an interim champ can defend his belt a couple times or even once it would build hype for a unification bout. Title fight seem to be few and far between and there is 9 divisions soon to be 10. Thoughts?
I think it is fine to have a time limit that the champion must fight. If they fail to fight for any reason (injury, contract dispute, or whatever) the belt should go to the winner of the top two contenders in a fight. If one of them gets injured, the contender #3 should step in and be able to fight for the belt.
There should also be a time limit on how long the champion can avoid the #1 contender if they haven't fought each other in the past. A few champions have hand picked opponents for whatever reasons rather than fighting the most deserving opponent.
