In some cases, I think it's more of a numbers game. Silva for instance, always faught standing. He would get taken down sometimes, but that's not where you imagine him to be at home. Basically, he known for his standup and was there more often than not that eventually he had to lose by that method. Chuck had great TDD, so eventually he was going to get KO'd. Edgar was so durable and full of energy, that his fights in general were going to be long ones.
Fedor is just a toss up though. He was known for his KO power and had good submissions that any method of him losing is probably equally shocking. Werdum could've landed a bomb of an upkick and ended it too.
The technique is more ironic though. Rashad landing an overhand on Chuck, CroCop getting headkicked, Fitch getting ground out, etc.
