I mean I realize Penn recently put up a stinker of a performance but it's a shame that has to erase/edit history in the simple minds of those who can't remember past one fight.
those fighters have all been grappling since they were kids.

bj literally started bjj one day, and won the mundials 4 years later. then he strung together all these wins of top ten fighters in mma when no one expected him to.

Can't they both be prodigies ? Like, we don't need to start talking shit about BJ because Weidman is damn good, right ? Why try to use it as an opportunity to tear down Penn ? Seems sorta.. pathetic.

AS others have stated, Weidman, Jones and Rousey had extensive life long backgrounds and succes in wrestling, before switching to MMA.

BJ came out of nowhere, took up BJJ, became a world champion, went to MMA, and became only the second guy to win championships in two divisions, where one division was above his natural weight, and he took it from the then-goat of the division.

Although the others are amazing athletes, it doesn't really compare to BJ's crazy run!

Too bad he didn't have a proper work ethic. He could have been THE goat!

31 is too old to be a prodigy. He's a fully formed fighter in his prime.

Yeah, as other mentioned....BJ was just a natural. He wasn't a kid that grew up with this stuff...he got into it one day and not long after he was dominant...and the full game came to him very quickly. Anything he put his mind to it seemed he could do.

Weidman atleast dedicated his life to the most important base in MMA..though his improvement in some areas is prodigious in some ways. Not really in MMA, but i'm talking about his transistion from collegiate wrestler to having success as a submission grappler rather quickly. In MMA, it was impressive how quickly he came up and won the title, but it was nowhere near unprecedented and certainly not BJ-esque in spoiled rich kid to MMA prodigy to world champ. BJ in MMA is full prodigy and now he's over the hill which will happen to Chris as well, and be just as ugly if he sticks around too long like BJ. It's funny calling someone that when they are in their 30's...same with calling Belfort a phenom.

Prodigy is a term horribly misused in society and the misuse applies to both BJ and the potential others.
