To reverse your example on you -

Fighter B wants to land jabs on Fighter A but misses most of them. So Fighter A is winning then?
No, how is that Octagon control? Both want to stand and are.

Because Fighter B and his stand up is not effective striking. I guess my point was that if Fighter B keeps it standing, you are deeming that a victory in the form of octagon control. But in my example Fighter B is not landing effective strikes, so Fighter A wins that battle. Right?

Takedowns are considered, well... More imposing than striking up your opponent. I honestly wish I had something like "X is quantified by _____" but there really isn't. It's pretty much how good you can look in front of the judges.

...And Phil Davis still won every round.
Giving the first and second round to Phil is acceptable because it was somewhat close. But the third round??? No one in the world gave that round to Phil.

Defense is not valued as offense. It makes sense that the rules favor offense because they want for the fights to be aggressive and not conservative and passive.

This is why mma is shitty. If I had of learned that I would be tuning in to watch point fighters make snooze fests trying to wrestle fuck for wins, I would have switched off. Just as it happened, the night I tuned in was Chuck vs Tito, and I was a fan for life after that.

That is Octagon control, but bear in mind that Octagon control is the second least weighed judging criteria. It counts, but almost anything else counts more, so unless that takedown is the only thing that happens in the round, the other action should really determine the outcome. See C and D here: http://www.ufc.com/discover/sport/ru...regulations#14

Striking =|= grappling. They're completely different and should be scored differently. Defending takedowns shouldn't win you a fight outright, but if there are a significant amount if takedowns defended that should certainly factor in for the guy defending them.

IMO anyway.
