The fact remains that we take very large life defining facts as they are spoon fed to us. Made a good personal run at proving or disproving the Theory of Evolution? Is the universe 13 billion light years across because you went out and proved it or because you'll just trust that Neil DeGrasse Tyson knows what he's talking about.
I don't even argue that they're wrong. Just that we accept what we're told as being fact with zero personal effort to verify these facts.
As far as the OP - An unshakeable belief that things happen for a reason and that the Big Guy is going to get you through the hardships of life is a big plus. Regardless of whether or not you believe in any of that is irrelevant. The believer gets something out of it whether it's placebo effect or not.
I actually have done some research into how large the Universe is.
If you ever want to get into a discussion about it, let me know. It's pretty crazy and interesting at the same time.
