Well, no one can say for sure exactly how Carwin or McDonald punched when they first stepped into a gym. However, I reckon that it would be rather unimpressive. Bear in mind also that technical skill in striking, and the actual technique you use to strike, are COMPLETELY different things.

You have a much more skilled striker than either of those guys who also hits just as hard in Lawler as well, but it's no secret, he just puts his hips into those punches.
Carwin looks like he's been training for a few months, not years. Look at the JDS fight...jesus.

Effort to finish, plenty of guys have it, but can't. Maia nowadays puts his ass into it, but really can't punch his way out of a wet paper bag. Look at Linkeker's awesome rock 'em sock 'em technique:

Also, Cus said Tyson was a power puncher before he trained him, said he'd be the youngest HW champ the first time he saw him spar, because of his power. If he unintentionally does things right (which he didn't according to Cus, Atlas, Rooney and Mike himself), wouldn't that be part of his DNA?

Of course you can improve..but you are bounded to your genes.
You can train all your life but odds are that you are not going to run the 100m under 10 seconds.
