Get over it... Jones won. People need to move on and quit looking for ways to show Gus won. He lost, plain and simple.

The only reason the fight was close was because of the Unified rules round-based scoring, where an argument can be made that Gus took three rounds. Under Pride rules, Jones CLEARLY won based on him coming closer to finishing the fight and dominating the action down the stretch.

Agreed. Hendricks won under Pride rules. He inflicted more damage. This is damage that comes closest to finishing the fight, not superficial damage like cuts. Hendricks was also more aggressive in looking to finish. GSP was reduced to being a points fighter in that match. UFC rules favor points fighters.

Jones beat Gus under Pride rules for much the same reasons. Gus inflicted a lot of superficial damage especially with the cut over Jones' eye but Jones came closest to finishing the fight. Gus could very well have won under either rule set if the fight had been stopped due to that cut.

Pride Rules:
  • Decision
    • If the match reaches its time limit then the outcome of the bout is determined by the three judges. The fight is scored in its entirety and not round-by-round. (In Pride events staged in the United States, however, the fights were scored round by round.) After the third round, each judge must decide a winner. Matches cannot end in a draw. A decision is made according to the following criteria in this order of priority:
  1. The effort made to finish the fight via KO or submission
  2. Damage given to the opponent
  3. Standing combinations and ground control
  4. Takedowns and takedown defense
  5. Aggressiveness
  6. Weight (in the case that the weight difference is 10 kg/22 lb or more)
If a fight was stopped on advice of the ring doctor after an accidental but illegal action, e.g. a clash of heads, and the contest is in its second or third round, the match will be decided by the judges using the same criteria.

This fight wasn't fought under Pride rules, which means you can't assume the fight would have gone the same way if the fighters knew the rules were different.

Anyway, it doesn't matter since Jones took this fight under either set of rules. Jones was the only fighter who was close to finishing the fight via KO or submission, which is the most important official criterion in scoring. Jones also finished the fight stronger, which was constantly cited as the (unofficial) key to winning a decision in Pride.

Gus put up an unexpectedly close fight, but he still lost. Just let it go people, let it go.
