Yeah, they would've either matched him up with CC in the semis or the final. It was too big of a fight to put in the first or second round of the tournament.
That's why I liked the Pride tournaments, they weren't a traditional bracket, they did it like the FA Cup here in England.
The FA Cup, they start off with the teams, and the teams up win go into a lottery, and then they draw them, and those are the next round for those who don't know.
So, I liked that they made the matches for the next round.

Yeah I think it's better that way. Makes for more build-up for the bigger fights.

There is a funny story about cro cop and randleman. When fedor was watching the fight and randleman KOed cro cop, he said:"(some ugly word), PRIDE is going to be pissed." because as he said, they wanted Cro Cop as their champ, because he was very popular You can be sure that PRIDE didn't prefer fedor as the champ, he wasn't charismatic enough He was highly respected but not prefered.
That's true, but at the same time, he'd just lost to Rampage and Sakuraba at middleweight, he wasn't supposed to even be in the tournament, no one thought he had much of a chance against Cro Cop, which was why it became such a huge thing when he beat him.
And then putting him against Fedor in the next round was to create this huge story going into the fight. There's no way Cro Cop would have fought Fedor in the next round.
Your probabley right but then again he did still have the win and a history of threatening big names which we saw again vs Fedor.
As I pointed out though this was actually quite rare in Fedor's career for someone to be "hot shotted" into a fight with him on the back of short term form, more often he was facing guys like Coleman, Fujita and Hunt who while they had shown the ability to be competitive at a high level in the past were not coming off strong short term form. The only other fight that spring to mind for me is Rogers years latter in SF coming off the AA win.
Again as I said I see this as kind of booking at something thats happened more often in Anderson's career, indeed many of the opponants he's faced havent had the same history of competision at the top of the sport as Randleman and have been coming off of more questionable wins in terms of decisions/importance.

I think at 3:11 of this video is when Fedor finds out that Randleman won. I can't read Japanese or speak Russian unfortunately, but it is interesting to see how he reacts.

Yeah, there was a definite reason for the Randleman/Fedor fight, and that was, it was a great fight to sell. You had the underdog angle, you had the revenge angle, you had the Giant Killer angle (to borrow a term from English football, not necessarily beating a giant), it made sense to make that fight.

The fight delivered as well. The Randleplex will go down as one of the most epic moments in the entire history of the sport.

That's one of my all time favourite moments. Living in England, there was little to no access to PRIDE shows, so I read about this slam, and thought "That sounds bad", I saw it and just went "Holy fuck!" It was absolutely amazing, and I think Mauro's commentary just added to it because he would get much more animated.
That being said, it was another Randleman fight that provided one of my favourite commentary lines during Randleman/Ninja, and at the start of the fight when Ninja just came out with a flying knee and Quadros reacting and you just heard this "And it's Kevin Randleman vs Murilo "Ninja"... OH YEAH!!"
