Question about the 40/60 weight distribution in muay thai

Is it safe to say that this pretty much just applies in terms of kicking and checking?

its not for everyone, remember to do what feels natural but thats not an excuse to not work on technique.

It depends on your style, body type, and what you are doing in the fight (rushing, defending, feeling out...). Watch tapes and study their body position for each application.

Everyone here knows that I would personally recommend it. For Muay Thai I actually tend to keep my weight a bit more back oriented than that, even. I probably keep 70% of my weight on my back foot, so that I can keep my lead leg light for checks and teeps. I'm liking it even more these days because I've been experimenting a lot with using my teep in much more of a jabbing fashion, feinting with it frequently and using it to get inside.

Edit: But, to answer your question, no. It applies across the board. It's ideal for boxing as well as Muay Thai. Power, defense--they all benefit from this weight distribution.

Weight distribution is a pretty preferential thing. It also depends upon the situation in my opinion. Against someone who's coming forward I keep my front foot pretty much unweighted, as my lead leg is used for checking most kicks as well as using push kicks to keep distance. When I'm coming forward, or using my hands, my weight is usually more balanced between my two feet, and when I clinch, my weight is almost always 50/50 if I'm squared up. Obviously it shifts when I want to do something, but as a start point it's 50/50.

But, that's just me, and I'm sure that others' inputs will vary.

I started out with a 40/60 distribution.

Now I'm much more grounded with checks.
I try to check alot with left feet keeping most of my weight on the back feet.
I do check from the right leg but that is usualy a very subtle switch/stance to land counter left kick to liver.

I like a kick withafter a check with a 0/100 distribution pivot .
It's exposive as a kick but the skin on my shin riped on both legs doing that.
So I don't ''always'' kick like that.

The down side is lack of controle because of how much of your weight is moving around. A simple teep and you are on your ass.
