You have a point, and I wanted more divisions back in the day as well. It just seemed like it wouldn't have enough depth at the time. The Japanese crowd ate up the heavies, even the ones that didn't belong there. That division was an easy sell.
K-1 was a mix of legit talent and a spectacle show. I think for Kickboxing to progress it needs to move away from that spectacle aspect (4 fights in one night wtf?) and become more structured and sports-like similar to what the UFC did to MMA. That includes set divisions with champions and can still include occasional GP's to spice things up and create new stars.
