Being tall doesn't really favor one or the other, but if does make some moves in either easier or harder depending on the size and build of your opponent. In Judo, I tend to use a lot of footsweeps and backward leg throws like osotog gari, ouchi gari, and kouchi gari. But I also like dropping seio nages a great deal as well, unless the guy is a total fireplug those can work fine for taller people. In wrestling, I tend to go with ankle picks, high crotches, and sweeping singles, since it's pretty hard for me to get all the way under guys for doubles and fireman's carries. But one of the great things about grappling is that pretty much any grappling art works for anyone of any build...I don't feel like there's an optimal physique for any type of grappling, just optimal styles for various builds.

In wrestling tall guys present a few major problems that translate to bjj better than what judo will IMO.

Leverage - In wrestling, you can apply holds slower with more leverage that can be very devastating. You do this in bjj as well. In judo, the emphasis and most effective way to win is with a well timed explosive or quick throw.

Transitions - Long guys in wrestling have a deadly weapon in that their longer limbs can reach things that make a takedown more easily turn into a takedown and a pinning hold simultaneously. In bjj this is a major advantage because longer guys can neutralize the lower body while attacking the upper, or neutralize the arms while attacking the neck. Anyone who has wrestled knows how much of a bitch it is when a tall guy gets the legs in. He is going to destroy your arms, neck, and shoulders.

Definitely.

But I'm not sure I get what you're saying about the transitional thing.

Can you rephrase the bolded bit????

I was thinking hooks initially but I don't think that is right.

Yes, that is what he means. Or a single hook. Tall guys can stretch you out pretty nasty.
