TS , no you do not have to be a speed demon like RJJ or Floyd Patterson to pull it off.
There's always more than one way to skin a cat and while you might not get the same eyepopping results , there's no harm in adding something to your bag of tricks or to play around with.
You might not have their speed but maybe you have extra reach ....maybe you hit real hard and have ppl very defensive.....maybe you have quick feet or fast hands or good upper body movement. Maybe you're well schooled with minimum "tell" in your actions or have good timing. Maybe you've got good ring IQ.
Too many ppl on here are quick to say u cant do this or that without ever knowing anything about the guy who's asking it.
What you have to do is be more judicious than them in where and when you use it.
Some quick tips (in no particular order) :
1) use it when you've got the guy hesitant / a bit off / youve turned him / he's hurt / tired / backing up.
Not in the beginning when he's fresh or if he's coming forward.
2) learn how to come BEHIND the glove . Also helps if you can throw to the FRONT of the face.....where you would aim your jab , except your hooking there.
Hell , sometimes just throw it ON his gloves ...hard. It's a shocker sometimes , if u can surprise him.
3) it's easier and more deceptive if your start with your lead low. Raise it up from below his eye level and turn it at the last second. This isn't gospel though.
4) sometimes I find it easier if I can get them to lock eyes with me.
5) use it after you have them scared of your jab , your regular hook , your unpredictable and staccato attacks.
6) lots of feints. Watch and learn things about your opponent with those feints.
7) most importantly , make a defensive move right after. Learn to land that hook and then push with the same hand without pulling back.
Throw that hook and dip to your right with an almost simultaneous and smooth motion.
Jab after that hook without drawing your hand back.
Always remember to expect a right hand cross/ straight or left hook as a counter so keep your right hand ready to deflect / block / parry the counter left hook and to throw your left shoulder up to protect yor chin . Be in readiness to roll or dip that right hand.
8) dont just throw that hook for throwing's sake. Use it to get him second guessing your attacks. To set up more jabs , to set up your right hand.
Land that leaping hook ......pause ......jab......feint like you're leaping or hooking again then right hand and dip.......leap and throw that left hook again.......watch him cry a little on the inside.
9) it's not so much a leap as it is a shift with both feet.
10) don't do it from too far out. That "leap" is just a matter of inches
11) don't leap UP like Naseem Hamed or Floyd Paterson but forward.
12) don't get too close . Its a long(er) hook , not a tight one. Hook OUT , so to speak.
Distance control is important.
13) make sure you think "speed". It's actually more "quick" than "speed" if that makes sense.
Don't bother if you're only sparring half assed ......or you could and use it to identify and fix any "tells". If you can land even 2 out of 10 sparring half assed then full out should be easy , I guess.
Still , throw it fast and pull back or tap them at the last second. That arm control is necessary for proper execution.
14) work on eliminating / minimizing any " tells".
Speed doesn't mean much if I can see it coming , especially cuz it's a long range move.
15) work on accuracy. Probably one the top 3 things to remember (along with minimizing any tells and coming behind the glove).
If after all that u miss ...not good. Plus , even if he sees it coming and counters properly , just the fact you landed it might make him miss / will take the steam of his counter / might make him less eager to counter and more prone to defend.
16) don't spam it.
17) make sure you dip your head / change position after you throw it.
Dont wait for him to throw back and then do it. Do it anyways. If he was thinking about it ...he won't do it now. If he wasn't thinking about it , it still looks good. If he does throw a counter , you'll look like a genius or with super fast reflexes.
18) sometimes I like to throw a long ...a very long lead uppercut (thumb up) with the same motion......but that's a different story.

I don't know about that.
His attitude is too much of a "I know what I know so fuk you..."
*future student* : "....but HOW do you know , oh wise and awesome Sensei ?"
NLM : "well ......ahem*.......Sherdog......cough*... ......old threads.......internets ......"
weak grins from both sides.

I think maybe because most beginners try to do good with what they know first before seeking more knowledge.
It's easy to say "this is the way" when all you're doing is reading stuff all day and parroting back.
Polly The Talking Parrot may know more English than Mr. Wong from Shanghai but I bet I know who'll have it better in New York.

It's not the "real serious" part that made me laugh as it was his "grim" approach to boxing.
GTHO with that shit.

it really doesn't matter where and how he attained the knowledge but there is no denying the fact that NLM knows a lot about boxing and general fighting theory. His biggest problem is his lack of experience (training and sparring), and attitude in applying most of these theories. I'd say his attitude is probably his biggest flaw.
i want him to succeed though. i truly do. i want him to prove me wrong. but i am pretty sure what's going to happen is NLM is going to goto Sydney, join a gym, train. then he's gonna get rocked really hard in one of his sparring sessions and realize his limitations. then he will either give up completely or give up and just box for fun, or fix his attitude and start all over again from ground zero. irregardless, he will never be a good boxer. but i'd really like to see him prove me wrong...
