Brotha, I can't see any sense in this argument. The whole premise of "kick checking" is to take the weight off the leg and lessen or absorb the impact. I understand that sometimes you have no choice but to brace for a kick, but I certainly wouldn't reccomend it as the default.
I understand your description of the san shou blocking method, but it's effectiveness is greatly diminished when a guy is chopping down with his leg kicks. I assure you, I train and have trained with a lot of great kickers and if you tried to brace and get heavy on the leg they are kicking at more than a few times......... you'd likely need a wheelchair to get out of the gym after a hard sparring session.
First I'd like to say I train Muay Thai and I check kicks. I've never used the bracing method except as a last millisecond emergency resort but I recognise that San Shou fighters do use this technique. I'm just trying to highlight the distinction between having your weight on a leg and actively bracing, they are two different things.

True , it's not just having your weight on the leg. It's bracing it and bracing it to the extent its almost like you're doing a split squat.....just way quicker.
I learnt about stepping or leaning forward the lead leg and tensing it off Bas Rutten. It dramatically reduces pain an the straight right counter down the pipe makes em think twice about kicking again. I'd never be quick enough to get out the way close range and a check is less counter friendly. I think?
less counter friendly for punches maybe but not for returning fire with kicks.
if you lead leg check, you can immediately fire back the leg you just checked with with a switch kick or check and "roll" your leg inwards and fire the teep back (if that makes sense).

or really how hard you are sparring. if im going light with my kicks, i get them caught here and there but the the moment the intensity/speed/power goes up, you see less kicks getting caught. thats my experience, anyways...
This is muay thai 40 plus years ago. Note how Vicharnnoi (who is the winner of the bout and in lighter short) use a stance that is rear foot heavy with upright posture while also keeping the body bladed (so is the other guy but he had comparatively worst posture than Vicharnnoi)
He really isn't in what I would call a bladed stance. His hips are aligned at a 45 degree angle not pointing sideways. Different Nak Muay have different variations in stances but none modern or old have a full on TKD style side on stance. You just can't check fast or effectively from that stance. A guy like Samart had a fairly bladed stance because he liked to punch but it still didn't go past 45 degrees.

Not even the best kicking fighters - just kickers that have mastered the basic techniques, will be too fast and recoil too strongly to catch.
Even the best Nak Muay get their kicks caught. You or I would never be able to catch their kicks in a million years and if we did we'd be picking ribs out of our lungs after. Catching kicks is a skill that takes ages to develop.

Definitely not. You have to be able to step with the kick and being sideways makes that very difficult.

Those last few vids that Sour Deisel (?) posted up (that quickly got deleted) reminded me of Hong Man Choi vs whoever.
your talking about those last sparring videos I posted of Nuke getting his legs kicked into pieces by a midget lol yeah they were misteriously deleted very shortly
about the video, I think you CAN use a semi bladed stance but not a full on bladed stance like in boxing.. but you definetly want to be somewhat bladed if you want your punches to have any power, so imo its about a happy medium

yes yes .....very mysteriously.
PS - I guess forum rules state we can post random ppl's vids online and make fun of them but posting a fellow member......even with no comments ........God forbid that happens on Sherdog's Standup.
