I'm graded in both BJJ and Judo. So, yes I do.

Umm, no, you don't know what you're talking about.

Even if you had a terrible belt-inflating coach, there are governing body restrictions for "time in grade", takes years. Beyond that, you must have an embarrassment of a Judo sensei if they give out brown belts to people who can't even Randori effectively.

Don't care about belts in either (though have belts in both). Ideally both would be like wrestling or boxing (or just about every other sport), and not bother with belts. They just tend to be about ego.

If Roger Gracie or Teddy Riner didn't have black belts, do you think anyone would be confused about whether they were good or not in their style? Did Karelin's lack of a black belt in Greco cost him any credibility?

What was it Royce Gracie said - something to the effect that a belt only covers a couple of inches of your ass, the rest is up to you?

I would love to get a black belt in Judo like others have said so you can use that knowledge to help others. Also would like one in Akido.

Actually no, you can get belts in judo for refereeing, or kata, or just theoretical knowledge. Judo belts were never solely about competition. In fact, the higher ranks (the kohaku belts, 6th and beyond) have no competition component at all.

Its a different model for belts (and actually since Kano started the belt system in martial arts, borrowing from something like tea making), arguably there's nothing wrong with that.

You can be a fantastic judoka, multi-time World or Olympic champion etc and still be a first or second degree black belt in judo (ie Teddy Riner). Or you could start judo at age 50, never compete, and become a sandan through coaching or refereeing. The belt is as much about theoretical knowledge as anything else.

Which is another reason to just get rid of belts in martial arts. They don't mean what people think they mean, and just cause confusion. If I tell you Teddy Riner is a second degree black belt in judo, it means almost nothing. If I tell you he's an Olympic gold medalist, it tells you much more. If I tell you Nick Gill is a 6th degree black belt, it could mean almost anything. If I tell you he's a two time Olympic medalist and national judo coach of Canada, you know his credentials.

It is not so much that I care about receiving the belt or not receiving it. It was more about I didnt enter Judo with the idea of being a Judo blackbelt one day. I just wanted to improve my stand up. I think I will do a judo competition one day to see how I do.

But I entered Judo so I can be the guy who scores the takedown and gets top position because right now my go to move is pull guard and work from there.

I did do freestyle wrestling but I found out that in Gi jiu jitsu I really needed to on how to attack the gi standing up. And my current instruction on standing GI attacks at my bjj gym wasn't enough.

Which country are you in? He's talking about the UK, I imagine, where the situation is exactly as he describes.

I got up to my Red Belt in Tae Kwon Doe, and honestly I didn't really feel that I accomplished anything significant.

I haven't even gotten my white belt in BJJ (I just started), and I put so much more effort into BJJ than I ever did in TKD.
