That was a very good interview. No one is going to listen to it if you don't embed the video though. I agree on what was said about Petis' great kicking because of his TKD background. He has been training all of his life kicking, so the transition into MT was not that difficult, compared to someone who starts directly into MT and has trained for 5 years or so, and has never kicked prior to that.
What also stood out in the interview is what I have been saying on this forum regarding Pettis' striking style: He aint doing Taekwondo in the cage. Pettis has a TKD background, but he is not doing TKD in his matches. We cannot say TKD beat MT when Pettis fought Cerrone. Pettis is doing a mix of everything. He doesnt really even chamber his kicks. Bendo has more of a TKD style than Pettis.

in order to acheive 1st dan blackbelt in WTF tkd , you must do a pattern called "KORYO"
in this pattern there are tiger claws to the throat , knifehand strikes to the groin ,grabbing the groin , elbows to the face , kicks to the knees ect... all of this is part of tkd , you dont recognize them and they are considered illegal strikes but the fact is that tkd as a martial art is more than just a round kick or side kick ,
pettis kicked cerrone with a shuffle round kick to the liver ,, it doesnt get more tkd than that .
dick roufus also trained in tkd and has incorporated what he learned into his kickboxing style , as well as muay thai , dutch kickboxing , mma kickboxing , karate ect... thats why its called mixed martial arts , but pettis calls his base martial art tkd, cant we have a fighter in the UFC
If Pettis isn't doing Taekwondo, then Cerrone isn't doing Muay Thai. Likewise, if Cerrone is doing Muay Thai, then Pettis is doing Taekwondo.
Trying to label fighters' styles is pointless, especially in a sport as eclectic as MMA.
yeah, but at least Cerrone's style resembles his base art of Muay Thai. can you really say that Pettis's striking looks like a TKD match?

Not really. At least, it doesn't resemble it any more than it resembles any number of kickfighting arts.
The only reason Pettis' style in the cage doesn't look like a TKD match is because the rules of TKD are what determine the style employed by its competitors. No one's going to call out a Kyokushin guy for not representing his style by throwing only body punches.

ahh...so Muay Thai as a striking art is a more realistic form of fighting than the other standup arts you mentioned? Muay Thai wins again...
go watch Cerrone vs Stephens again (or for the first time if you havent seen it). what standup art do you think his style resembles the closest, if not MT?
