They also don't work jobs or engage in activities with a high casualty or mortality rate. I've never seen a female deck hand on a crab fishing boat.

Interesting.

I don't think that is the end of the story.
The reasons women tend to live longer are not known but merely suspected. It's not agreed and they are still looking into the reasons. The gap has lessened as women have taken on male roles in western society so that seems to be part of the picture but there are biological ones too: "The gap between male and female life expectancy is closing and men could catch up by 2030, according to an adviser for the Office for National Statistics. Prof Les Mayhew said the difference between the sexes peaked at nearly six years in the 1970s."
The latest theory I read about says "A study has found that mutations in the vital mitochondria tend to be weeded out if they are harmful to females but are retained if they are harmful to males. This is because the process of natural selection works only on the mothers because it is they who pass on the mitochondria to their children.
This means mutations that damage the long-term survival prospects of men can build up in their mitochondria, which could explain why they have a shorter average longevity than women, the researchers said."
Another study which might be more relevant to this discussion looked at the role of testosterone by looking at eunachs. They reported: "The study doesn’t directly explain why the eunuchs lived so much longer, but it provides the strongest evidence yet that testosterone — the key difference between the eunuchs and their peers in this study and a proxy for the difference between women and men — plays a role, says Steven Austad, a biogerontologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, who was not involved in Min’s study.
“This is the most thorough, well-controlled study of its kind,” Austad says. “The sex difference in aging and longevity is an almost unexplored area, and this study highlights that testosterone is part of the issue.”"
The reasons are far from being decided and testosterone has not been eliminated as a cause.

Really can't know the long term effects of HRT as it has not been around long enough for the longitudinal studies needed to conclude this.

Any study that looks at a special population of people and tries to not only pin down causation among a myriad of variables, but also extrapolate the effects of that supposed causative relation on the public at large, is extremely flawed.
