N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) - it is a mucolytic, which thins mucus secretions.
Average dose is 600 mg, make sure you take extra vitamin C (double the amount of NAC you take) while taking it. I would say twice a day up until your fight.
It works great, and is often used for bronchitis, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis etc ....

Whenever I have chest congestion, I also have sinus congestion.
Trick from my grandma that I've always done and had good success with was eating something big, spicy, and maybe a little salty. Eggs with a shit-ton of hotsauce, minute brown rice with salsa, something like that.
Then after you eat that and have got your nose running, drink some warm tea. Lemon Zinger or chamiomele was what we always had. Not sure but this old timers trick seemed to work for me the majority of the time.

I do something similar. Go to a Vietnamese or Thai place, order some soup, make it as spicy as you can stand, and it eat. Then go home, make the shower as hot as you can stand, and stay in there for awhile.

Forgot about the hot steamy shower. That's helped me in the past as well. I do a long one and then go straight to bed. Wake up feeling cleared out.

Hot shower, hot tea, spicy food and mucinex D. You'll be hacking up some gooey crap in no time.
