So they won't be true rankings.
Even though most of the top guys are in the UFC now that they bought Pride, WEC, Strikeforce........there are still a handful of top fighters not under their promotion.

Pointless really, more or less (excluding the recent weird title shots), the right fights get made at the top of each division.

I think Dana already explained the "point" of these rankings...
It's to help new fans instantly get a feel of where each fighter sits in the grand scheme of things.
"this fight features the number 3 fighter fighting the number 6 fighter..."

They will be true UFC rankings. Well, true enough, I'm not so sure having media members decide the rankings is the best idea. Ideally there should be some mathematically based method to be the foundation for rankings.
At any rate, UFC ranking is not any different from any other sports league having rankings just for their league.
Also, rankings today are extremely biased for the UFC anyway, so I doubt it will matter much.
