That gif shows that he was pushing off.
A good ref would realize that a knee bar is a painful submission and that if somebody is tapping out there will be no question as to whether it was a tap or not.

I want everybody in here to remember this discussion. The majority of the people here and in the Bellator discussion thread say it was a good call.
Now, the next time something like this happens and the commentator talks about how it was a bad call, I want to see what everybody's reaction is.
Why is it that when the ref makes a call, that the majority of people on Sherdog agree with and repeat what the commentator says?

I compete, train & part time officiate, it was a judgement call that I could easily see as being justified from where the ref was standing as opposed to where the cameras & viewers seen it. Perspective & subjective.

When it first happened they were talking like it was a bad/questionable call. I knew once it happened, Dan did the right thing. It wasnt until they saw the replay that they kinda changed their mind a bit.

it's tough making that split second decision and he made the call he saw, however, this is a good example of the small things that separate the really good officials from the rest.

It was the right call. You can't play games with a tap out. The whole, slap the leg, am I posting up, am I tapping, throwing the head back yelling while doing it bullshit.
With ankle locks, and knee bars, if the ref doesn't jump on that shit quick, you're gonna get Imanari'd.

I think he made the right call. It was a close one, but I think it was the right decision.

You don't need to be an official to see Dan made the right call. For a guy that's always let fights continue well after they should have been stopped I'm glad to see he is growing and trying to look out for the fighter's safety. I personally believe Dan Miragliotta is one of (if not the) worst refs out there, but he did his job here and it's a shame he'll still get crap over it. The only thing that I question is it seemed like Ben Lagman snapped out of any pain he was feeling immediately as Dan was calling it which gives some credit to the idea he was pushing off though it could also be Quito just releasing the pressure, hard to tell from the angle. Regardless I agree with the poster that said you can't put an official in that position and get upset when it is stopped.
