swithcing to southpaw, when?

I recently started training heavily and regularly. Ive noticed that there is lot more southpaws at the gym where i train. But some of these guys are completely new.

So my question is when did you or should you switch to southpaw?

At my original gym, everybody started out orthodox and only after a while training could one switch to southpaw and it was still very much argued against.

Personally i feel like its a cop out by people who feel uncomftable in orthodox and figure they rather throw jabs with the right hand. Also maybe cause it sounds flashy/fancy,

thoughts?

It's harder to compete against a southpaw in most sports, that why you see so many trying to convert to it.

I understand why people do it, but my interest is when people do it.

What im seeing more and more of is people starting off as a southpaw. IMO when your new you dont really know if southpaw benefits you over orthodox (with injuries being an exception)

Most people don't switch they start off as southpaws because they are encouraged to because 1) they are natural lefties or 2) their coach decides it would be an advantage to be a southpaw. People who actually switch would again switch quite early on. I doubt someone who is well established as an orthodox is going to suddenly decide to go southpaw.

Learning how to box in the opposite stance is a different matter altogether and more advanced fighters might start learning to add that to their game but not to change over to completely.

Some fight sports encourage switch hitting from early on, you'll see it more in the kicking arts like TKD and kickboxing. Some boxing camps/trainers also encourage it i.e. Brendan Ingle who trained Nas and Bomber Graham.
