In a street fight are body punches really necessary?

I mean if you clinch then I can see Body punches being useful but in a non clinching situation will it be as useful as say jabbing or throwing hooks? I suck at Body punches so I might be bias towards it .

In a true street fight, you will want to maintain a distance that makes body punches
a rarity. You will want to fight from the outside at a distance, preventing a clinch since
in a real street fight, your adversary may be armed with an edged weapon.

it can be a good idea if you dont want to injure your hands. Punching to the face means you can possibly hit the hard part of their head and injure yourself, cut your hand on their teeth, break their nose or bloody their mouth and then proceed to get their blood on you if you didn't manage to stop them etc,etc

I think body punches are more effective in street fights because most of the jokers you'd be punching/kneeing/kicking have no fucking clue what they are doing, and/or have never been hit in the liver/diaphragm before, and most don't think to even worry about it - they are concerned with their faces. One good shot is all it takes.

However, as with all street fights, always be prepared for weapons, the second raptor, dirty tactics, etc.

My instructor once told me that a well placed punch to the solar plexus was all took for him to KO someone in a street fight.

And I can see the plus points here -

Less chance of injury to your fist
Low level of conditioning makes them particularly vulnerable to body punches
As someone above posted, streetfighters are usually more concerned with protecting their face
less visible injuries or wounds, which would make it easier for you to avoid further confrontation from legal authorities etc.

This. I used to go after the stomach/liver/solar plexus in my early teenage years. Those type a shots are REALLY useful in a situation where there is trashtalking before the actual fight starts. What I used to do is if I see that the situation will not go quietly I would hit the guys in the above mentioned areas (without talking too much so I can get him by surprise) and the fight would be over before it has even started). So body shots are very very effective in those typical bar situations when some drunk idiot gets in your face and u just know he aint going away. So if some like that gets in your face dont try to match him with trashtalking macho bull, pretend you're a little bitch who isnt gonna do shit and then deliver the punch. Step aside though, he might throw up on you

In a street fights with multiple opponents the firts poster is right- you want to stay on the outside, circle etc. so body shots will not be as available

As I remember it, Rashad Evans (I think) in his article in BB Magazine, said his street fighting strategy growing up was to rush the biggest guy (because the big guy usually can't fight) and bury his head in the guys chest so that he is shielded from everyone else fighting. Then he just starts wailing away on the guy.

I imagine body punches are a big part of that.

no, neither is face punches as long as your opponent has balls to kick.

This, people never guard their body in street fights.

A throwaway jab-cross followed by a digging body hook will destroy many, many people.
