Having Trouble w. the Hip Bump Triangle

I've watched Ryan Hall's tutorial about 40 times. I'm getting really good at the modified hip bump, but my opponent has time to bring back the hand that was posted and "answer the phone," preventing the triangle.

I am trying to do it like Ryan shows it, throwing the opposite leg over the "crossbeam" of the neck, but it still feels really awkward to transition from the hip bump to that position. I feel like I am doing a kamikazee guard pull or something.

Maybe I just need to get faster, but this goes against how I usually learn jiu-jitsu. In my experience, if you know a move, you can make it work "slow," because there's not much the other guys can do if your technique is tight.

Do I just need to rep this out until I get quick at it, or are there some technique tips that helped you guys make it smooth?

I know that one detail I see people often miss when I teach this is throwing your back leg up high on their back as you shoot the triangle. Not only does it keep you attached to your opponent in a way which is breaking his posture, it usually slides you "up" the body so you can get a better profile to shoot the triangle and not rely so much on hip and knee flexibility.

That's interesting. You say "slide up" the body. Maybe part of the reason I'm having difficulty is because I am trying to "jump" my back leg up. It's very herky-jerky, like I am trying to get my leg up high and then bring it down across the back of his neck to anchor me.

When you bump drive your weight into his hand hard so its hard to move it. You should be faster then him if you get the weight into his hand correctly.

if he is getting his hand back in time, eithther you are not reacting quickly enough (which means you need to drill more) or you aren't attacking the sweep hard enough(or with the proper technique).

Word of advice, drill the triangle a lot, but in live rolling, just try and hit the sweep. Like he says in the video, your ability to hit the triangle is directly proportional to your ability to hit the sweep. Once you get great at the sweep, you wil start to see the window to hit the triangle, i get it quite often, you gotta bump hard though, especialy against good people.

You cant be gentle either, you gotta be explosive, and hit it hard and fast.

Thats what she said.

I definitely appreciate this thinking. I guess I can't complain too much, because in live rolling, I am hitting the sweep a lot. I used to use only the more traditional hip heist sweep where you wrap the guy's arm tightly and just turn his hips over. This sweep is more of a hip blast, and I'm just toppling over a lot of guys.

....BUT, still no luck with the triangle piece.

I wish I could explain the sensation. His hand is on the mat, but it's like I am just stuck in the mud. It feels so awkward "jumping" into the triangle from there that I feel like I must be doing something wrong mechanically.

are you just having trouble finishing your triangle? Perhaps you should check youtube for a video about adjusting the triangle, and ways to finish it. Or is it that you just cant beat the hand and lock your legs around the neck?

It's just beating the hand on this particular move.
