The only horror stories I have involve guys who wanted to spar without a mouthguard.

Beginners accidentally clocking each other too hard without a mouth gaurd is pretty common.

I've never seen any tooth damage, but I've seen some pretty mangled lips. The lips are soft and fleshy and teeth are hard and pointy. Always ends badly.

I once forgot my mouthguard but wanted to spar anyways, so I quickly popped in a boil & bite without the opportunity to form it. Wasn't the best idea.
