I was squatting/deadlifting in just socks for a while, but sometimes I had issues with my foot sliding. I've worn my wrestling shoes, "barefoot" merrells, and chucks. After all of those I have settled on New Balance Minimus 20v1 Cross-Training, they have a 4mm drop heel to toe.

When I was in college and lifting at the campus gym or the YMCA back home, I lifted mostly in tennis shoes until I blew the soles out deadlifting. Only lifted in socks there once, and it was shortly before graduation for a max pull. Since graduating and getting a quality bar and plates at home, I don't think I've put shoes on to lift once (I did put socks on once when the basement floor was fricking cold). I even do my treadmill work barefoot. But again, this is on my equipment in my house. If I was going to a commercial, I would be wearing shoes. I might go to just socks if nobody cared and it was a special max pull or something.

I squat and deadlift in socks, and I go to a gym. I always feel a bit self-conscious because I worry someone will object, even though the bottom of my socks are definitely cleaner than the bottom of my shoes.

I always squat in socks. I do my warmups and stretching with sneakers, then after I get ready to get under the bar i slip them off, then after racking the first thing I do is slip my sneakers back on. There have been people squatting barefoot, wearing sandals into the gym etc
