This, and the badminton comment.

Last Nov. I started coaching wrestling at a BJJ club and after I coach for the 1st hour, I roll with the guys at the end and I have zero grappling experience or knowledge of submissions aside from watching TV and youtube. I was also dead tired but that's how you get in shape. I usually can't move the day after and for some reason can't turn my head to the left after almost every session. But for me, I love the feeling of being tired. I don't think its possible to get in shape without working hard... And when you're talking about the "lion's den", I learn by far the most by getting submitted, sometimes I even ask to start in their guard. The most important thing is just not to get hurt so don't go with someone that you think will hurt you.

Anyways, you should probably opt out and pick up the discipline you want to learn at a more relaxed place without aspiring fighters. I'm also doing kickboxing but since I want my brain in one piece, I do it at a community center so its a bunch of randoms and I regularly opt out of sparring.

I appreciate all the responses.

Through everything I wrote, what it all comes down to is if I should be in a gym where I'm focusing on the fundamentals first or if the system of being thrown in the lions den would provide better results for me. I'm not here to prove I'm a tough guy, I came here with a concern, in part due to the training and in part wondering if this is a wise investment. I got screwed with a contract once before, I'm not trying to get locked down in another situation that doesn't work best for me.

I also agree, I do believe part of this is not knowing what I want. Martial arts is a new thing to me, I have a background in sports and figured this would just be a good transition. I enjoy being trained, the disciplined skill set and just the continuos challenge of learning how to fight.

I'm going to go in tomorrow, take the round of classes and see how it goes. Ill also check out the GB school and another to see the different options before I make my decision. My last day is Tuesday at midnight to opt out.

Ask if they have any classes which are more begineer friendly.

Some classes while not specified as advanced or begineer can be very different

At an old gym there was no way of knowing from the timetable that thursday night was technical and friday night was arse kicking time. Obviously a begineer who only showed on up friday is going to be in for a hard time.

Personally, I think that the Gracie Barra school will be better for you.

You're not training to fight and it seems like you're not getting what you expected from your current gym.

btw, 125 a month is a bit steep in my opinion. Especially if you don't feel like you're being properly instructed and etc.

Also, you're gonna feel sore for the first couple week but your body will adjust.

I hope that you're able to get out of the contract without having to pay some sort of huge cancellation fee if you do decide to leave.

Been there myself mate, where trainers are paying little attention to what certain people are doing, or only interested in their buddies who have been training years. I dont get why they run clubs if theyre not passionate about teaching everyone who walks through the door. Id opt out and find somewhere that actually gives a shit about new people!

sounds like you need to switch to yoga... maybe some cardio kickboxing... with a little more toughness you could probably handle karate
