Touche, but with what kind of balance? Like kick and knee a downed opponent? Imagine the brain damage hell a good wrestler would wreak upon someone if he could move to north/south and throw knees smashing machine/Coleman style, we've already seen it in pride. I like the rules just the way they are. If anything they should be stricter regarding eye pokes and punching the back of the head. IMO.

i don't necessarily agree with the thread starters points, ...but i'll admit, i have lost some interest in mma throughout the past year or so

You're a fight fan then, not a MMA fan.

Heavyweight: Best guys only fight once a year.

LightHeavy: Jon Jones is amazing. No complaint here.

Middleweight: AS doesn't defend his belt often enough.

WW: GSP just tackles guys and can't finish them. I'm tired of seeing this.

LW: Best guy is oversized, but should be hard to beat and fun to watch.

Anything below lightweight: This is probably my biggest complaint about the UFC: Do we really need to have all of these divisions full of tiny fighters?

The thing that is special about the UFC is that there is only one weight class per division and there aren't that many divisions. 5 was enough, but we keep adding more. And now every single card has these tiny fighters. Make it stop!

In terms of excitement, wouldn't you be more excited to see a couple of regular guys fight in a bar than watch GSP lay on top of Diaz for 25 minutes? Isn't that what we know we're already going to see?

I used to get really excited for every card but it just seems like the cards are getting less and less special and more and more diluted. Your thoughts?
Sounds like you've been following mma the same length of time as myself. I'm 32 now and have been watching mma pre UFC (back in the Vale Tudo VHS days). For people like us this is a transitional time in mma in many ways - it has/is becoming a legitimate sport, women's mma is being introduced, the many weight categories reflect those of boxing, the figters seem to have less character nowadays etc.

I'm not sure if its the length of time we've been watching mma, we're old farts who remember the good ol days and dont want to let go and change scares us, or we're getting to an age where we'd rather be going out picking floral pattern curtains with the wife but I tend to agree with you with regards to interest waning somewhat.

I still read reports on events as soon as they happen, I'm on Sherdog all the time but I don't bust a hump to watch live events the way used to.

Mma is not exclusively unified rules and rewarding point scorers though. You dont have to be a fan of every aspect of the sport or fighter in it, the unified rules are far from perfect.

1. If GSP brutally violates anyone on the floor it'll be the first time in a long time. I think this is sorta what folks are complaining about, no? If he brutally violates Nick Diaz on the ground, that would be pretty exciting.

2. The fact that a strategy works and cannot easily be countered by his opponents means it is an effective strategy. No one seems to disagree that GSP is a very effective fighter. However, that does not necessarily make it an interesting strategy, which is what is being discussed in this thread.

Still as big a fan as ever but I won't be surprised or upset if the people who came to the sport later are now starting to get bored with it. The hardcore fans will remain.

These are fucking fighters dude, they know what they are signing up for. Kicks and knees to downed opponents most closely imitates what would happen in a real fight. If somebody shoots for a leg and misses and leaves himself open he should get punished for it via soccer kicks to the head. Elbows on the ground for the most part just cut people you rarely see a true KO from an elbow I say go back to pride rules allow the kicks get rid of the elbows. People who are worried about the sport being too dangerous should simply find a different sport. Boxing for instance, there's no kicks in boxing period I bet they get way less brain trauma. (lol)
