So going into the final it was 46 seconds worth of action against none.

The entire situation was quite interesting as it led to both the alternates having to fight (which killed the UFC 10 final) and the inclusion of superfights. The money bout for the UFC at the time was a Royce/Shamrock rematch; but Shamrock's body struggled to hold up for three contests in a single evening. He technically made it to the finals of UFC 3 but had injured himself in doing so. Assuming Royce would win his semi he didn't officially pull himself out as he wanted the rematch... but once Royce had his towel thrown in Shamrock lost interest in competing injured and withdrew himself.

Strangely Royce not pulling out immediately and instead waiting till the match had essentially started almost saved the show. If he'd have pulled out prior then Jenum would have faced Howard in the semi-final... leaving a non-existent final.

That's right....thanks for the correction...

And this was how they hyped joe son....the mentor of kimo.

As we've seen in the UFC Heavyweight division though, a good wrestling background couple with sheer size can win you a title.
But they're still guys winning big 4 titles (in most cases against decent opposition, if not world beaters) with only a handful of professional bouts.

And once again, while seven bouts as opposed to three or four, Spinks did beat Ali with remarkably little pro-experience. Yes, it was old and shot Ali who was little more than a thin shadow of what he had once been... but still an Ali who hadn't lost in five years and 14 bouts.

As I say... it's a rare occurrence... boxing, especially modern boxing (despite the success of the likes of Shumenov, Rigo and Ioka) doesn't have examples like Joe Warren who come into MMA and within months have beaten former WEC champ (and at the time 11-3) Chase Beebe and immediately follow it up by beating P4P entrant KID... and beyond that over the next two years go 5-1, including beating some pretty decent names (albeit with the help of sympathetic judges). But it does/did occur.

i wasn't saying he was a sprinter.

You did, unless you specified him as a wrestler, which you didn't.

i mentioned neal and okoye as non-football players who succeeded in the nfl. in addition to sprinters. the notion that a sprinter could never make the nfl is ridiculous.

I bought the PPV for the UFC that Bowen was in.
I recorded the event on VHS. During the broadcast the announcer said that these fighters (the ones who were actually scheduled to fight in that UFC) had to win in some kind of prelim fight.
But I never could find any thing about those guys fighting in some kind of a prelim event to secure their spots for that UFC.

Anyone else remember this?

Yeah a lot of the prelim fights never saw the light of day, they're still rare to this day. I have seen some prelims but I don't remembe what event and this was back on Youtube when Zuffa didn't care about the uploading of old UFC's

Speaking of Melton Bowen, what were his real boxing credentials? Did he have any?

Is this him?

If so doesn't look like he ever fought and beat anyone relevant.
