Mouthpiece horror stories
Anybody seen/experienced anything terrible by using a mouthpiece that didn't fit quite right?
And in general, at what point did you upgrade to a custom made? Any issues after that?

You honestly shouldn't have any problems getting Your mouth guard to fit. After putting it in boiling water, dip in warm water as quickly as you can just to remove the boiling water on guard then place in mouth, bite down, suck in the air, water and saliva, and use your fingers to push the guard into your teeth from the outside and inside. You should hold that way for 1 minute. I also i found that single mouth guards mold better and faster than double mg.
Some people dip the guard in ice water for 2 seconds, which makes the guard solid and harder to mold and many people FORGET to press with their fingers on the inside and outside of the tooth. You may have a good imprint outside, but on the inside its still loose, which leads to it falling because you don't have a snug fit.

If your dentist doesn't provide you with custom mouth guards free of charge, find one that will.
My dentist made and gave me a mold of my teeth, so whenever I need a new mouth guard I give it to him, and pick up a brand new custom mouth guard a couple of days later.
It's the only way to go.

This is true. Every boil and bite I've owned has had such a tight fit that I needed to use a hand to get it loose. It's easy to get a good fit - just not very comfortable because of the heat.
As for when to upgrade to customs - How about if/when you start sparring at high intensity? If you're likely to get hit in the head hard, then it's probably time to think about it.

Considering the cost premium of a custom is less than just about any single piece of dental work I consider it a worthwhile purchase. Maybe it is no better, but to me its worth the cost so I don't worry about it when I would otherwise.
Only Horror story I can think of isn't really a horror story more just sucky.
Friend of a friend was DQed for a Muay Thai fight he was winning because his boil and bite kept falling out of his mouth.

Custom made. You want the best since dental work is so expensive.
