thanks Kick. I hope to just rest next couple weeks. I'll probably hit like an exercise bike for an hour a day or something once the pain goes down. Don't want to pack on a bunch of weight while I'm healing.

My mom thinks I've lost my mind. Said why can't I just be a referee or something. I told her I might eventually, but this is something I want to do for myself.

I think I am in pretty good Shape. I am 40 yrs old, 6'4 205 and I train usually about 3 days a week Muay Thai and BJJ each training session and I still have to take my BP medicine. Be careful with that sir...

Training manages to kick my ass pretty much every time. DUe to my work and home schedule, I Had been doing MT and BJJ back to back on tues and thurs nights only....without much other training the rest of the week. Maybe a short jog or something if I could work it in.

Now other nights have freed up. Last week I tried to go at least 1 hr for MT on Mon-Weds. We also have an MMA class in the evenings I'd like to get into as well. However by thursday of last week, my limbs were so sore and heavy I could barely move, so I just went to a regular gym and did a light workout.

I keep hearing different opinions, so I hope to get some good info here. At my age and weight, do I just push through the pain and discomfort and hope to get used to it, or do I "Listen to my body" as some have told me and take more time to ease into additional training? Last thing I want to do is get hurt and have to sit out several weeks.

My goal is to drop to 250 by next year sometime and have my first MMA fight by Oct 2013. I feel these are all realistic goals. But also want to do it right and not kill myself before I get there. Any thoughts?
All the power to ya, man. I took my first MMA fight when I turned 40. Its good to see others in my age group doing their thing as well.

I went to a new dr the other day. He said my bp was a bit high, but nowhere for concern. He said as my weight comes down, the BP should fix itself.

thanks man. Hoping I can get my first fight in this year.

Dr. called today and said one of my right ribs has a slight crack after all. He got the x-rays back today. I'm waiting on a call back for what physical restrictions I should follow. I'm rather disappointed.

congrat TS when I started I was at 550 lbs it was very slow for me I'm now down to 475 I had stopped training because I thought I was to old at 38 myself however after reading this thread I'm going to go back I want to back to 250 that i was before I went through a nasty divorce and some other shit that put all that weight on. Plus like you i have no disillusionment of fighting in the UFC although here in oregon I don't think there is many little ama or pro things.

My Doctor wanted me to do the gastric bypass and I said bullshit

that is awesome man. I see the young guys at the gym and feel like kicking myself for not doing this when I was 22. That is great you lost so much. I'm sure you can get the rest off too, its too bad there is not much MMA up there. I'm from Northern Indiana, and there wasn't anything there either. THe county I lived in had a law against MMA fights, pretty stupid..

I been blogging my progress in more detail at http://fat2fighter.com if you go through the archives you can see my and read my progress from the beginning.

Good to see this is still going. Congrats.
Can we get a list of before and after wieghts and BF%.

One thing I meant to ask you is what is a good weight for you?
I know you are 6 foot, but ideal weigh is much more about construction of the bones in your hips, chest, shoulders and reach than about height.

On take downs, have you learned proper break falls?

Smaller guys can kind of wing it a bit (not adviseable but doable) bigger guys really need to know how to fall. REALLY need to, I can pick and hold guys my size, with proper tech I could maybe pick you up but I simply could not put you down carefully.

On rib injuries take extra time, I know you don't want to but just do it, everytime you hear about a guys first rib injury they get 85% healed, get back out there hurt it again and then take off the right amount of time. I myself am a classic example. Last one cost me 6 weeks.

Honestly the best thing for it is rest, if you are worried about wieght gain I really can't suggest anything more strenuous than walking. Every movement you do should be placing strain through your core ie ribs and therefore you really can't do very much.

Saw your doc said you have cracked a rib, my said the same but I didn't get Xrays, this was the 6 weeks I am talking about. I know its not what you want to hear.
Oh and don't try to stretch it to much, I was doing it every day when I mentioned it to me doctor he said "how is it going to heal if you keep ripping it open" I said "Ummmm" and then I stopped doing that.

This reminds me of a big guy (6foot 300ish) in my first class, I was dying during the warm ups and there he is right next to me just cruising through.

It either motivates or demotivates people seeing things like that, personally it motivated me.

thanks that is all good info.

My starting weight was 350....and body fat was around 48% or so. I'm currently around 310, not sure of body fat. I was at 300, but gained some weight over the holidays.

My Dr. is also my MMA coach's dad. They are going to talk about what kind of activity would be suitable for me. Then my coach will draw up a plan for whatever cardio Doc says I can do over the next 4 weeks or so. I'll know more next few days.

He said the main thing, he doesn't want me to get out of the habit of being at the gym, or to get away from the pacing and timing. So I'll see what they say. THe doc described it as "a very small crack".

I'm usually pretty good at falling, but in this case, I landed exactly the wrong way, probably the only possible way I could land and injure myself.

I saw something I might get when I go back, its like a rash guard football players wear. Its got rib protectors on the sides, they form to your body then harden after you first wear them. FIgured it wouldn't hurt to have that during training when I first get back.

Oh, I'm 6'0 tall also. My goal is to get to a minimum of 260 and fight heavyweight. My coaches suggested 240-250, but HW cutoff is 265. I think we'll see how well I'm doing once I get there then go from there.
