Boxing cups?
Ok, once again here with a noob question. I tried the search function, but still suck with it.
Why exactly are boxing cups the way they are? Wouldn't a boxer be more mobile if they were to wear a standard cup versus the big padded underwear looking contraption? I've never worn one and was curious what exactly was the reasoning behind it being the way it is.

It just gives extra abdominal/kidney protection. The drop in mobility is barely noticeable if you have a decent cup. Extra range of motion would only be needed if you were in a style that utilizes kicks, which is why muay thai fighters don't use boxing style protectors.

^ this is it. Boxers don't need to kick, therefore they get added protection. It barley limits mobility at all.

Ah ok, thanks. I always assumed it would've limeted ones mobility with the whole bobbing and weaving deal versus doing it without. Thanks

I do Muay Thai and feel no restriction from my Winning no foul protector, probably because my hips are always open when I kick. Teeping, I may notice a bit, but not restrictive. I feel they're much more comfortable than standard cups.
Just looking at design I think it's a good visual to show where you shouldn't punch for your partner due to it being tall

another point: boxers cups are normally plastic (expect fairtex's), while muay thai cups are steel.

The only time when I have had a mobility issue with a boxing protector was when I didn't have my own cup with me, so I had to use a lender cup that was too big for me. I made a mistake by weaving with my torso instead of dropping the level of my hips and had the stiff/too big for me groin protector dig into my ribs. If it's a good quality/properly sized protector, there shouldn't be any issues.

Hey Mark, question for you, when you do head level kicks does the cup shift? I've had issues with compression shorts with the built in cup shifting/floating when doing high kicks, which basically negates their whole purpose maybe even making them more dangerous to wear.

Clamps talked me into this cup http://www.ringtocage.com/Muay-Thai-...-Cup-RC23B.htm
Protects you python from all possible harm while being barely noticeable. Head kicks, teeps, knees, you name it, nothing disturbs this beauty.

Yeah, I wear a shock doctor, similar design, it doesn't move either.
I've been interested in the boxing type ones so I can just put it on before sparring, but figured if I threw a head kick the boys would peek out, like how they do in the compression shorts/cup combo.
