It's always better to have qualified coaching than self training.

When I was like 15 I found out the (fitness) gym I went to had a room with two heavybags in it and a box of assorted gloves. I would work that in to all my workouts, and watch instructional videos on youtube before each workout. I had a friend film me once and realised how terrible I looked.

Ive self trained through my first 2 amateur fights...its definitely not the way to go if you want to make a fight career. However the quality and proximity of the gyms around me as well as my full work schedule and family, it makes it hard for me to make it in. Now I've trained with a few gyms for weeks or months and have basic knowledge of their routines and just try and duplicate that at home.

However you have to be able to push yourself past your breaking point and keep training twice as hard. Not only that but NOTHING replaces sparring.

It's good to train by yourself to supplement training at a gym, but I don't know anyone who is actually good at fighting that only trains by themselves.

Sparring is too important IMO
