Original Post:

I'm surrounded by pro fighters in my everyday life... but they are all male. I'm a female looking to have my pro debut this year. Currently, I am about 115 and cut to atomweight. I'm looking to gain about ten lbs of muscle for now and would then be able to cut to strawweight. Being from the Cesar Gracie camp, my primary discipline is bjj. I'm curious about what effect the increase in lifting to gain weight might have on my flexibility and speed. I try to lift a lot of reps at lighter weight to keep my muscles lean...

So, are there any pro females checking the Ask the Fighter forum? And if so, how do you lift... especially when you are trying to gain?

If your looking for actual advise you came to the wrong place. If youre looking for woman, you came to the wrong place.

^lol no, I personally know there are quite a few female martial artists here on the sherdog forum.... we just don't post a lot or often don't indicate our gender.

I was just curious if anyone is still posting or if any of the females check the Ask the Fighters... I know the pro guys barely even respond.

I'm not expecting too much input here, was just curious if anyone had something to contribute...

I can't speak for women specifically, but I put on quite a bit of muscle a few years back and it only improved my speed, with no affect on flexibility (though you do have to stretch after every lifting session).

You should be able to add muscle without slowing down or decreasing your flexibility. Your added strength and power should actually make you faster. You will just need to continue to stretch and do bjj to stay flexible. The only "negative" is that more muscle will require more oxygen, so you will have to work on your conditioning. I've noticed when I muscle-up, that it takes a toll on my cardio, but if you continue to train hard (cardio) while you gain the muscle it shouldn't be a major issue. You'll just have to see how your body accepts the added weight.

Cool, guys... good advice. Thanks. I will just up my lifting and stick with my jitz, stretching, and yoga and should be fine.
