I stay ahead of my peers learning curve by learning from youtube. I will usually memorize a move from youtube, try it out before class, and then look to use it during grappling/sparring.

I think that you basically want enough people to say that they do self train (ignoring the fact most if not all primarily train at their gym) so that you can convince yourself that just self training alone will be enough for you.
Sorry mate but it won't, most of these guys practice at home and train in the gym.
Not to be harsh but you know otherwise you could get yourself hurt
