you are getting the right advice... Its best to work with someone, there's no substitute for sparring, even if your not going full tilt; however, if you can only attend class once a week, then you should train by yourself. For one, focus on your cardio... having a partner might make it fun, but you can run, swim, jump rope, punch the bag, etc, by yourself. Not to mention, plenty of weight training, pushups, pullups, situps, etc. if you can only attend class once a week, at least show up in top physical condition so you spend your time working on techniques and sparring... not resting between rounds.
Personally, I go to a heavy bag a lot and work on a specific technique or combination more then I try to hit it for 5 minutes straight or as fast as hard as I can. I love the uppercut bag and work on rolling a punch under the bag and moving my feet at the same time to land in a position to counter punch.

note these are for grappling martial arts and not for FIGHING necessarily
Dave camarillo's position impossible broke down Judo stuff super simple for me. I started using it in tournaments especially gripfighting it was the difference that gave the the competitive edge. LOL swear I wasn't paid to say that.
Also Saulo Ribeiro's JJ University helped tighten up super basic concepts in detail that no BJJ teacher was patient enough to teach me. After this I was able to have well thought out defenses and feel confident in the WORST situations possible. I became better at saving my energy and I could frustrate guys that were even better than me on the ground by knowing basic positions in more detail than them EX. back mount survival, mount survival, passing la guarda.
Swear I wasn't paid to say any of that they are both great learning resources.

Years gone by since but I used to self-train karate katas, not exactly MMA but the simple katas help balance and are easy to do by yourself once you learn proper form.
