I love hearing transformational stories like this. Too many people blame genetics, time restraints, age, or whatever, for being overweight and out of shape. It's great to see examples of people taking personal responsibility and doing what it takes to achieve their goals. Keep us posted TS. You will undoubtedly motivate other people to take your path.

This, thank you. Too many people make excuses and impose limits on themselves.

Someone at work the other day commented on how much better I'm looking lately and asked what I've been doing, I told them 4-5 hrs a week of Muay thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and/or MMA training. Their response.."Oh....well good luck" and walked away lol. Guess they wanted to hear I took a magic pill and 50 lbs just disappeared.

Training manages to kick my ass pretty much every time. DUe to my work and home schedule, I Had been doing MT and BJJ back to back on tues and thurs nights only....without much other training the rest of the week. Maybe a short jog or something if I could work it in.
Now other nights have freed up. Last week I tried to go at least 1 hr for MT on Mon-Weds. We also have an MMA class in the evenings I'd like to get into as well. However by thursday of last week, my limbs were so sore and heavy I could barely move, so I just went to a regular gym and did a light workout.
I keep hearing different opinions, so I hope to get some good info here. At my age and weight, do I just push through the pain and discomfort and hope to get used to it, or do I "Listen to my body" as some have told me and take more time to ease into additional training? Last thing I want to do is get hurt and have to sit out several weeks.
My goal is to drop to 250 by next year sometime and have my first MMA fight by Oct 2013. I feel these are all realistic goals. But also want to do it right and not kill myself before I get there. Any thoughts?

Great plan and stick to it. I've done similar thing back in 2010 I cut from 260 to 220 and however I trained from 2009 and got my fight summer 2010. It's a great road to travel stay on it. Only one advice - my only mistake was that I didn't cut to 205 before the fight. So cut as much as you can don't stop at 250 go down more, because with regular lifting and proper nutrition you will have more strength as LHW.
Keep us updated.

Class last night started out great. Was feeling strong and was hitting the takedown drills hard core. Took down some younger, more experienced fighters pretty handily a few times even.
THen toward the end, one of hte bigger guys when taking me down, lifted me up in the air and slammed me to the mat. I came down hard on my side and my elbow got caught underneath me, right up against my rib cage. Knocked the wind out of myself bad. They thought at first, I may have cracked or broken a rib, but it seems I just bruised them. Still hurts like hell.
Needless to say, I'll have to take it easy the next couple weeks, which sucks. I will have to at least do something once I can breathe right again

One of the biggest mistakes on training - someone slammed you? What is next someone will KO you? Go easy on training and sparing that it's not fight. It would be a stupid thing to get an serious injury on the training.

I dont' know if he meant to slam me. Once he got me up in the air, I'm a heavy dude, so there is no easy way to get me to the ground lol
Ribs are feeling way better today, only hurts if I put pressure on them, I can move around pretty well. Still gonna take it easy until next week and just start back in with bag and pad work.

And, thus, this is why the landing mat was created.

Does anyone ever feel bloated? I always feel so bloated on the days I don't train. I could swear I gain like 10-15 lbs those days, but I know I"m not. Any thoughts? lol
