Kolat's a badass. He has a prettier shoulder throw than many high level Judo guys.

Upper body throws from wrestling can be chained with gi throws pretty seamlessly. However, trying to chain leg attacks to upper body throws grabbing the gi is basically a waste of time IMO. Every transition from a leg attack to an upper body attack has already been figured out for thousands of years in the wrestling world. Trying to somehow tie that into cloth grabbing seems to me more like fear of the unknown rather than a more effective option.

I wrestle with the gi every day. I teach wrestling classes with the gi as well. The only worthwhile transition from gi grabbing techniques to wrestling or vice versa are upper arm ties (grabbing cloth behind the tricep to snap or highcrotch/single), or grabbing the belt in the seat belt position.

Do you incorporate collar drags into your gi wrestling at all?

before I left my previous gym one of the guys wanted to stat working with me and record and make a you tube video of my set ups. When I find a new gym maybe we will record them and see what you think about the transitions.

A lot of the stuff that is based off underhook and wrist control works well with the gi, also duck unders and arm drags can be worked effectively by grabbing the sleeve.

No. Not to sound like a ****y prick or anything, but my level of wrestling is so much higher than anyone I compete against or train with that I can basically get a quick takedown without ever having to grab material. The pro fighters or brown/blacks that I train with might be able to stop 1 or 2 shots/body attacks in a row but I can get a takedown within 20 seconds on 99.9% of guys out there.

That being said, from my experience, the highest reward/least risk takedowns that lead to side control dont involve grabbing the gi; they are simple basics. Think of wrestling in the same mindset as jiujitsu: Is it better to be able to transition from cross collar choke, to triangle, to gogo, to omaplata, to side naked, to back take? Or is it easier to slap on a tight triangle and adjust as many times as needed to finish the guy? Wrestling is the same way. It is easier to go full blast on one move that has very little risk and then adjust for the finish that to chain many moves together in one go switching from gi attacks to wrestling attacks.

Word, so when you teach you still only teach your style? I understand how when you are a shark in a fish tank you don't need much for takedown success, but I assume they don't have your ability.

I was just curious about the collar drag because I have had zero success in incorporating it. It's hard to turn people with it, it's impossible to hit an ankle pick with it. Closest I get to success is pulling guard while collar dragging and coming up on a single, but that's totally jiujitsu wrestling

I try to teach the fastest, most effective, least dangerous route to a position. To turn someones upperbody, IMO the best way is with a drag or underhook. I think it takes MORE ability to hit things such as collar drags than the absolute basics of an underhook or drag.
