WBA introduces electronic scorecards

By Gabriel F. Cordero

During Saturday’s WBA KO Drugs event in Kingston, Jamaica, the WBA tested a new electronic scoring system for use in the near future. The program was developed by the WBA technology department and utilizes tablets. The test was administered by twelve officials and allows scoring to be automatically tabulated to a database. “This makes it possible to see the scores on the Internet in real time through a particular web page,” said WBA Executive Vice President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza.

“Moreover, as soon fights finish, all scores will be seen on the website of the World Boxing Association. This system enables different types of analysis of consistencies and judge’s scoring among others. We are innovating in boxing with such scoring systems.”

The system consists of an electronic card, which is seen on a tablet and where each judge score the bout just as on the traditional paper cards. “The idea of using this program is to replace paper cards, and allow greater transparency in the scoring,” added Mendoza.

Unless im missing something here, whats the aim? Imo it wont make shit a difference on robberies, theyve basically just wasted the time and the expense of transferring it onto an electronic object.

Pretty much.

For a second I thought it was saying they would be on the internet round-by-round...

... which would mean the long discussed "judges scores should be displayed between each round so it's known how the judges are scoring the fight" would sorta happen.

But then...

... does this mean they won't be shown real time and you have to wait until the fight is finished?

Are we going to be seeing a cornerman checking his cell phone to see how the judges have it in between rounds?

I just think it'd ruin the tension of waiting for the score to be announced. If there's a dodgy decision going down people will now be pissed off by the 5th round instead of the 12th. If I was watching a fight I knew was blatantly going to broken score cards I'd probably tune out. It'd the equivalent of watching football while the score goes up without anyone actually doing anything.

I don't think that the casual fan would sit online to follow it. But maybe more hardcore fans find interest in it.

Mostly though I believe it's good for transparancy, that we know the judge don't change a round or two after seeing how is going for this or that fighter.

The only concern is that the broadcaster might use the info, and in that case I understand your point. That wouldn't be a good thing.

don't think it's a legitimate concern that judges actually go back and change scores

Maybe not. I wouldn't think so either but... what do I know?
