Yeah, in April 2010. Should Rick Story still be ranked higher than Johny Hendricks? He beat him in December 2010. Evidently, it's still relevant.

But his top win was against a guy in the top 15. Losing to top guys doesn't make you a top guy. Meanwhile, Gustafsson just beat a guy in the top 5.

Or, it's just common sense. Davis has never beat anyone ranked as high as Shogun, but Gustafsson has. Also, who would be the favorite doesn't matter in rankings. It's not about what will, might, or could happen. It's not about potential. It's about actual performance and what has already happened.

I don't see the problem.
The problem is, you aren't telling the whole story. Phil's lone loss is much more recent than Gustafsson's. Also, Gustafsson just beat a guy ranked higher than Phil or anyone he has beat.

That doesn't matter to rankings. A guy who is ranked #25 could be the better fighter than a guy ranked in the top 10. But beating the top 10 guy will do more for your ranking. For example, when Davis beat Gustafsson, Fight Matrix had Gustafsson ranked #31. When Davis beat Nogueira, Fight Matrix had Nogueira at #15.

Beating Gustafsson then isn't the same as beating him now.

Hermes Franca finished Nate Diaz. That is pretty much all that needs to be said.

Davis' only loss is to Rashad, who probably beats Gus with ease. We still have no proof that Gus can beat a high level wrestler, he's been given matchups that favor standup brawls lately. Davis beat Gus in fairly recent times, although we all know Gus has improved a lot, but probably not in the area that would lead to a victory over Davis right now. Davis beats Silva and probably Shogun too (who has been avoiding wrestlers for a while now and is overrated in the rankings), so Davis is ranked over Gus. Not that hard to picture, really.

And I REALLY like how folks are saying that Gus' loss to Phil was years ago, so it doesn't count, but that Shogun is some kind of monster NOW because of his Pride run. The Shogun that shows up every other fight (Coleman, Griffin I, Vera, etc) is barely top 20.

Hamill is a high level wrestler.
