At the moment, five-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach is tucked away in the city of Las Vegas, as he counts down the days to his star fighter Manny Pacquiao’s fourth duel with Juan Manuel Marquez, a clash that is set for this Saturday night inside of the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

It’s never a sure thing whenever Pacquiao and Marquez set foot inside of the ring together, yet Roach has been oozing with confidence heading into the crucial battle.

One week later, one of Roach’s previous pupils, former junior welterweight champion Amir Khan, will be facing off with undefeated lightweight hopeful Carlos Molina inside of the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

While not the most intriguing of fights on paper, Khan’s bout with Molina is very crucial, as he will be looking to bounce back from his upset TKO loss to Danny Garcia this past July.

Following the defeat to Garcia, a bout in which he was dropped three times, Khan broke ties with Roach and hired the services of respected trainer Virgil Hunter, known best for his work with WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward.

Asked if he will be watching Khan’s next fight, Roach pointed out that he will likely have a ringside view of the action.

“I have Frankie Gomez on the show, so I will be there,” Roach told me following Wednesday’s Pacquiao-Marquez IV press conference. “I’ll probably take a look at it.”

Asked for any specific details on how he and Khan parted ways, Roach revealed that he simply wasn’t in a position to grant the British star's requests.

“They told me if I fire Manny Pacquiao and [Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.] that they’ll keep me on as trainer, and they wanted to be number one,” said Roach. “I said ‘Right now I can’t do that’ and they said ‘We’re going to go in a different direction then’. So I said ‘Good luck and I wish you the best’.”

In late October, Khan had appeared to have taken a few digs at Roach, hinting that his Parkinson’s disease was preventing him from performing at a high level. Khan has since tried to clarify what he meant by his comments and Roach personally doesn’t feel the need to focus on such remarks either way.

“I wish him well,” Roach would add, taking the high road. “I don’t want to dwell over that. It’s not worth it to be honest with you.”

Asked for any personal opinion he had on Hunter as a trainer, Roach expressed a strong belief that he likely won’t be able to refine Khan as a fighter at this point in his career.

“He has a good fighter, one of the best fighters in the world and one of the best boxers in the world,” Roach stated, referring to Ward. “Can he change Amir Khan? I don’t think that’s possible; people can’t change their character, he is what he is.”

Khan and Pacquiao had often trained alongside one another, even engaging in some heated sparring sessions in the past, yet their camaraderie with one another killed any hopes of them one day meeting in the ring.

With the dynamics having now changed, Roach admitted that he couldn’t completely rule out Amir as a possible foe for Pacquiao if he were to resurrect his career.

“They’ve always been friendly with each other and he emulates a lot of Manny, steals a lot of his moves,” said Roach. “I don’t think that’s a big fight. There’s other guys out there. Brandon Rios, guys like that, hopefully Mayweather. But a possible opponent? Yeah.”

Why not Warren? Anyways, be sure to tune into Diaz. He will not disappoint. The kid's technique is out there.

Well from what I got from ESB is that Molina manager tweeted that Angel Garcia is going to be in Molina corner...

Nice move for the Molina camp as he will be yelling shit all through out the fight.

Still though Khan via TKO 4th or 5th round.

Ten days before Santa Claus embarks on a worldwide journey to deliver gifts, Leo Santa Cruz will once again deliver fists in 2012.

In true throwback fashion, the unbeaten bantamweight titlist fights for the fifth time this year when he faces Alberto Guevara this Saturday at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles. Rare is the occasion these days when fighters in their prime even step to the ring three times in a calendar year.

Not only is Santa Cruz (22-0-1, 13KO) cramming in five fights into a 12-month stretch, but his latest ring adventure comes free of charge to all. CBS reenters the boxing fold for the first time in more than 15 years in showcasing boxing’s fastest rising action fighter (Saturday, 4:30PM ET/1:30PM PT).

Santa Cruz was still a few weeks away from his ninth birthday when Bernard Hopkins dismantled then-unbeaten Glen Johnson in July ’97, the last ever main event to air on the network.

“I wasn’t even old enough (to remember watching it),” the red-hot fighter sheepishly admits.

In fact, he was barely introduced to the sport at the time. Santa Cruz often accompanied his father and older brothers to the gym, but his first day on the job actually came on a dare.

“When I was six, he would take me to the gym to watch my older brothers. I played around on the gym equipment, but never received any real training back then. When I was eight years old, I remember one kid wanted me to spar. He was nine-years old - a year older than me – and had a year of training. I never fought before, but I beat him up. My dad asked me if I wanted to do it regularly, and I’ve been fighting ever since.”

The early years of his amateur days saw the final days of quality boxing on network TV. Santa Cruz was a couple months shy of his 12th birthday when Jose Luis Castillo upset Stevie Johnston in June ’00 in an afternoon out aired on ABC. It was the last time any free network aired a major title fight.

Santa Cruz is among an entire generation of fans having never experienced the feel of sitting at home on a Saturday afternoon to enjoy quality boxing without emptying their wallets. All of that will change this weekend, and hopefully for longer than just a one-time offering.

“I’m very excited that they chose me to be the fighter. It’s more motivation to train harder and give the fans a good show. It’s what I train for, to give the fans what I want. I’m very happy and excited, and I’m ready for this,” Santa Cruz insists.

Golden Boy Promotions has loaded up a card at the Sports Arena, most of which will air over three separate networks throughout the day and evening.

The main event – Amir Khan’s return to the ring against unbeaten Carlos Molina – headlines on Showtime Championship Boxing, with Alfredo Angulo plus unbeaten heavyweight and 2008 Olympic Bronze medalist Deontay Wilder in supporting action. Serving as the evening lead-in will be select bouts on Showtime Extreme, including a crossroads match between Shawn Porter and Julio Diaz

The building will have been cleared out and refilled by the time any of those fighters make their way to the ring. Paid tickets or a sufficient cable/satellite package will be the only way to catch that action.

For Santa Cruz, not only is the broadcast free, but so is entrance into the venue. He and his team understand the importance of getting their fighter’s name out to the masses, which can only create an even greater buzz for 2013 than what has already been the case to this point in his career.

“I’m grateful for that,” Santa Cruz says of the extra attention paid to his past several fights and even more so this weekend. “There will be millions of people watching and hopefully they will become fans. I’m happy and excited but at the same time very nervous. I want to give everyone a great show.”

I'm looking forward to see Khan fight. I want to see how he'll bounce back from some tough losses. I feel like those losses weren't really losses. I think he was robbed when he fought Peterson and he just got caught against Garcia. I think he destroys both those guys in a rematch.

How many fights does it take for a fighter to be back and in what fashion? I feel like three knockouts in a row against decent competition or absolutely sonning them. I really want to see a Mayweather vs Khan fight. Khan needs to get back into top form so then can make that fight happen!

Anyone heard what the expected ratings numbers for the CBS card will be? I think it will flop and do less than 1,5 mill.
