To be honest, I'm not hung up on it at all. I was happy getting my one stripe and I've been having a blast at this gym. Of course I'm a little bummed I don't have a knack for BJJ like he does.

I've seen one who came in with what he said was no prior BJJ/wrestling/etc. experience manhandling high-level white belts and even a blue belt or two. I even watched him get my instructor into an armbar, although my instructor did successfully escape it before getting the upper hand on him. Within what I swore was no more than 2 weeks, the guy got his first stripe. A week later, he got his 2nd stripe. It would have been interesting to see how quickly he would have gotten his blue but he quit after injuring his knee one night. He said he couldn't afford to deal with potential injuries because of the work he did.

Is he signed up for a competition soon? I've heard of guys getting their rank bar filled up for a psychological edge (imagine being a newly promoted blue facing up against a guy with 4 stripes on his - your automatic reaction would be "shit, this guy is probably a lot better than me" then it's just a self-fulfilling prophecy.

'a little' advantage? with 6 years of wrestling? how does a regular white belt get out of your side control or avoid being taken down in .3 sec vs someone who wrestled for 6 years? (btw, which kind of wrestling? and what did you find was most effective of what you learned in wrestling for bjj?)

The most I have seen anyone be promoted is by 2 stripes at once.
The dude was a blue belt who travelled around different schools and countries for a while, came back and was showing some serious improvement. So our instructor gave him 2 stripes.
4 at once is almost jumping a whole belt though, pretty insane.

Ditto. I got mine in six months as well, but without any previous experience in any grappling arts. And my professor doesn't hand out blue belts at all, as we had other guys in class who were white belts for 3 years. It's completely possible to get 4 stripes in that amount of time.
I did Shotokan (which I hated) for two years before I started BJJ. However, during those two years of Shotokan, I wanted to do BJJ the whole time, so I was constantly studying and reading Sherdog before I ever started training. I think some articles I read on Sherdog really helped me progress, because they helped me think/train smarter, as I approached training extremely systematically.

My gym focuses solely on nogi, so we don't stripe "white belts" but I can honestly say it's very rare to see someone advance that quickly. There have been some, but not many. When it comes down to it though, if he has the skills to support the 'rank', then he deserves the stripes to match the skills.
Why are you upset TS? Do you train as much as this guy? Does he have a grappling background?

Stripes only serve two purposes. The first is to make your belt look pretty and the second is to give you the illusion of progress so you keep paying your instructor money.
