I thought of the duct tape thing, not sure how well it would work,
like I said my balisong was $5, I'm glad I smashed the blade,
no regrets. I play with it almost everyday.

Vampire Monk,I don't mean do sound like I am trying to prove you wrong but the balisong is the strongest locking knife there is, the only thing stronger than a "bali" is a fixed blade. The only way for a balisong to fail is for the actual pins to shear which takes thousands of pounds per square inch(PSI) or the handles to break in two. Any other locking mechanism will fail before a "bali."

1) There's no such thing as a crappy Benchmade knife, period.
2) This goes for the Balisong. It's got titanium handles and a 440 stainless blade; the pins that retain the tang to the handles I believe are also titanium. I can't imagine snapping a Benchmade Balisong unless you decided to use it to pry manhole covers open or something.
3) I'd have to check to be sure, but I thing Benchmade guarantees their product for life, so it shouldn't be a concern anyway.
4) If you're a novice to the Balisong, I agree that getting a decent-sized cheapo with a not-so-sharp blade is the way to go. I can tell you my Benchmade was sharp enough to shave with out of the box, and I nicked my fingers up good a couple times when I first got it (mind you, I'd been twirling butterfly knives off and on for about 20 years at the time). Benchmade makes training blades also, which I think you can remove and replace with the real deal later (again, I'd need to check to be sure).
5) there's a guy who started making good quality, low-cost butterfly knives a year or two ago; I bought a couple for gifts, they're good and only about $30. I'll see if I can find out who he is and post a link.

Gregster great points!
1.) 100% Agree
2.) The pins are hardened stainless steel(just as strong as titanium)
3.) It is a limited lifetime warranty, they only cover defects in workmanship or manufacturing. If you were to pry with it and it broke you would have to pay o get it fixed. They do have a nice program called LifeSharp which for a $5 fee you can return the knife and they will put a new factory edge on it and make sure everything is working correctly.
4.) Again I agree about the cheap as a stated in my first post. Benchmade does make training balisongs but they are the whole knife(titanium handles and all).
5.) I would be interested to try one if you do find their site.

I'll ask my dad; he was one of the guys I bought it for, since I've been trying to get him interested in butterfly knives since he is a *very* serious knife collector and didn't have one in his collection. He actually gave me my Balisong as a Xmas present when I mentioned in passing how much I'd like to have one; I'd have reciprocated, but I didn't have that kinda swag burning a hole in my pocket at the time, and plus I think he's leery of flipping them around.
P.S. Speaking on Benchmades: my best friend, while not a genuine knife nut, loves the Benchmades. He bought his little brother one for a gift, a Benchmade tactical folder. His brother, it should be noted, is a veterinarian out in Texas, and in a pinch sterilized it and used it as a scalpel to de-sex a male dog. If that doesn't bespeak of the quality of their product, I dunno what does.

hey man if your right, then COOL, because I'm worried mine was gonna break
cause I play with it so much and I'm kinda rough with it trying all sorts of crazy moves,
so I HOPE that your right. If not, oh well, it's a cheapy

Random thread bump of the day courtesy of penn>gsp!
I just got a BM42. This thing is awesome. Knife porn if there ever was such a thing. I almost came when I opened the box, gazing at those gleaming titanium shafts. I've cut myself about 40 times this first week while attempting tricks way beyond my means. This one time I was trying a Y2K rollover (spin the knife around the thumb vertically) and I dropped it over my bed and it richocheted and stabbed me in the leg about a 1/4 each deep. Blood spurted all over the sheets. It was pretty hilarious. Anyway, this knife rocks!! Buy it!!
