While Dana is a big part of the UFC and it's hard to imagine any UFC event where he isn't there. I don't think the UFC brand would be hurt one bit if he wasn't around at this point. He did a great job of bringing the sport into mainstream, but at the point the UFC is big enough and the fighters are big enough, that they would go on without him.
It was the Ferrtita's connections to ACs and their money that did all the work. Lorenzo used to be top dog at the NSAC. Dana brings absolutely nothing to the table but rich and connected friends.
This isn't news to me.

Well he is important.
His reason for being in the spotlight is because the fans/media is always interested in Dana Whites opinion on a MMA subject.
The hardcore fans could probably do without him. But the casual fan needs him very much.
Look at any press coference the UFC does, 50% of the time during the conference its Dana White speaking. Then there is the 20 min after with him alone with the media.
All the information about the UFC is formulated through him, and because he is such a colorfull character, he gets a lot of spotlight.
When I first started following UFC I watched everything on Dana White but after a while you realize it's all hype. I didn't have time to sit around anymore, so now I just watch the countdown and the fights.
I think most fans just watch the fights with their friends and couldn't care less if Dana is running shit.
I think the real question and the only one that matters is how important does Lorenzo think Dana's image is to the UFC and so far it appears that he finds him pretty important.

This. Their friends from school and Dana is a fun guy to know. I doubt Lorenzo would ever force Dana out of a job.
