Easier than ripping a knee in a leg lock.

It's always the blood if they go out in competition.

It would take 3+ minutes of not being able to breathe at all to pass out from an air choke alone because you pass out due to the asphyxiation, not a loss of blood flow to the brain.

Most people would forget all rules and either tap to make it stop or start clawing at eyeballs if they went multiple minutes with no breathing at all in a grappling or mma match.

IMO, a lot of people call chokes "air chokes" simply because it hurts their trachea/adams apple.

most chokes / strangles put at least some pressure on the windpipe, even though they are also occluding arteries

I guess I've just been a puss to tap to the painful throat attacks

Ding ding ding. There are lots of chokes that apply enough trachea pressure to make you tap, but that would put you out by compressing your carotids if you tried to tough it out.

Is it actually blood flow getting cut off that makes you go out, or the barometer nerves in the neck? I was told the first is urban myth because you can't completely cut off the carotid by pushing on only one side, kind of like putting a hose on a pillow and trying to cut off all water flow by pushing it into the pillow.

Cutting off the blood is technically a strangle

Cutting off the air is a choke

So much of what we call "chokes" are in fact strangles.

It was my understanding (and perhaps I've been misinformed) that the decrease in blood flow causes the body causes unconsciousness. Of course you can't "cut off" the blood to the brain, but if you decrease the supply the brain will redirect the available oxygen to the autonomic nervous system, rather than wasting it on higher-level brain functions that aren't crucial to immediate survival. I'll have to check if this is all a bunch of BS...

I've heard this numerous times but it's not supported in the handful of dictionaries I've checked. Do you know where this alleged distinction originates?

People don't pass out from having only one side cut off.

You have to crush both carotids to make someone pass out from a blood choke.
